Hill Country Baskets quilt pattern by Bonnie Blue Quilts, approx size is 96" x 96".
Prior to the Civil War, German supporters of the European revolution of 1848 eventually immigrated to the U.S. settling into the Texas Hill Country in large numbers, these immigrants became known as the "Forty-Eighters." Germans were offered large plots of land in Texas. Many died en-route fom Europe, but those that survived became cattle ranchers, beer brewers, writers or local shop owners. Many of these entrepreneurs settled in Fredericksburg which was founded by John O Meusebach. He negotiated the only successful peace treaty between whites and Indians. He offered the Commanche Indians $3000.00 in exchange for the opportunity to settle on Commanche land.
In keeping with the ideals that led them to leave Germany, most of the Forty-Eighters sided with the union and served in the union army during the Civil War. The largest number of the Texas population against secession was within the German population.
