Mary Chestnut was the daughter of a U.S. Congressman and Senator in 1826 who was also elected Governor of South Carolina. At the age of 13, Mary was sent to a French boarding school in Charleston, but returned home in 1838 when her father died. In 1840 she married James Chestnut, Jr, whose father was one of the South Carolina's largest landowners. James, Jr. was elected to the Senate in 1858. While they resided in Washington they became friends with Jefferson Davis. They returned to South Carolina after the election of Lincoln to began the draft of the secession. Mary kept a dairy of all her experiences during the Civil War and her thoughts of the Southern society to which she belonged. Her diaries are known today as the finest literary work of the Confederacy.
