How do i build up on top of an exixting block wall? I want to add another 3 rows of blocks.?
I have a garden wall that is quite low and i want to build on top of it to increase it’s height. Is it ok to just add the 3 rows on top with normal cement or do i need to do anything else?
use a normal mortar…. you can make it yourself or buy it premixed, mortar is ‘just’ sand and cement (OPC, or Ordinary Portland Cement), but the mix has to be the right strength. the mix is about 1:4 OPC to cement. ie for every 1 kg of mortar you need 200g of OPC and 800g of suitable sand
if all you need to do is add 3 courses you can do it yourself, but if its somewhere prominent do a practise run elsewhere first. getting rows of bricks to align, although isnt tricky, there is a knack to it.
if you do decide to do it yourself, make sure you dampen the top course of old bricks if they are very dry (doubtful if they are in the garden) to stop the old bricks sucking all the water out of the mortar before it has chance to cure. if you think its going to rain after you have laid the bricks then cover them with a strip of plastic to stop the rain washing the mortar out of the joints
Brickies use a trowel to create a mortar bed, then use the trowel to ‘plonk’ some mortar on the end of the brick, and lay the brick.. aligning the row (course) of brick using a piece of string (or in exceptional cases a spirit level. surplus mortar is removed with the trowel. after laying several bricks the shape of the mortar is made using wahtever style is required ( a vee shape is usually a trowel, a rounded shape either 15mm copper pipe or another appropriately sized rounded object
