Why would this be deemed Risqué in Victorian Times?
From Jane Eyre:
“I knew my traveller with his broad and jetty eyebrows; his square forehead, made squarer by the horizontal sweep of his black hair. I recognised his decisive nose, more remarkable for character than beauty; his full nostrils, denoting, I thought, choler; his grim mouth, chin, and jaw–yes, all three were very grim, and no mistake. ”
No, not risque. But yes, probably a Romantic portrait of a glowering man.
I suppose there is a hint of the suggestive in that the female narrator admits that she is well familiar with the physical characteristics of his face. Still, I wouldn’t call it risque, even under the most caricatured version of the Victorians.
